VI Source: viNGN Now in Close-Out Period for Grant

VISource-logoVI Source:  The Virgin Islands Next Generation Network, Inc. (viNGN) CEO Lawrence Kupfer revealed at a recent board meeting the organization’s accomplishment of its goal to connect Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs) with the territory’s first all fiber-optic network, as well as its focus on closing out its grant for the institution of the new infrastructure, which will bring faster, more reliable broadband capability to the islands.

At this time, all 318 anchor institutions, which includes university campuses, schools, libraries and government agencies are  connected to the network;  the established Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will now be able to offer better service at more affordable rates.

The Virgin Islands Next Generation Network (viNGN) was established in 2010 as a public corporation; it is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Virgin Islands Public Finance Authority. viNGN was funded primarily from a grant by the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) as part of a federal program to improve the broadband capacity in the United States, its territories, and the District of Columbia.The program is called the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP).
