Everything to Hide: A Toolkit for Protecting Patrons’ Digital Privacy

In an era of dragnet digital surveillance from intelligence agencies and corporate entities, how can libraries fight back to protect our patrons’ privacy and intellectual freedom? In this course, Alison Macrina of the Library Freedom Project will teach about strategies and tools that can taught to patrons to computer classes and one-on-one tech sessions, or installed on patrons PCs, to help safeguard digital privacy and take back our right to read and research freely in the internet age. Alison will cover basic concepts in digital privacy and tools that are appropriate for a range of technical abilities. These tools cover search tracking, behavioral tracking, safe browsing, encrypted communications and more.
– Gain some basic knowledge of major surveillance programs and authorizations, how proprietary digital tools track users, and the effects of surveillance on privacy and intellectual freedom.
– Understand basic concepts in digital privacy like encryption, FLOSS, personally identifiable information, plain text, decentralization, etc.
– Learn how web browsers track you, and private and anonymous alternatives to mainstream browsers.
– Learn how websites and third-party trackers follow you across the web, and how to blind the trackers and make websites more secure.
– Identify some of the major privacy and security problems with mobile devices and some ways to minimize mobile tracking.
– Learn at least one advanced level security tool (PGP, OTR, I2P, TrueCrypt, etc.).
Alison Macrina is a librarian, privacy rights activist, and the founder and director of the Library Freedom Project, an initiative which aims to make real the promise of intellectual freedom in libraries by teaching librarians and their local communities about surveillance threats, privacy rights and law, and privacy-protecting technology tools to help safeguard digital freedoms. Alison is passionate about connecting surveillance issues to larger global struggles for justice, demystifying privacy and security technologies for ordinary users, and resisting an internet controlled by a handful of intelligence agencies and giant multinational corporations. When she’s not doing any of that, she’s reading.

This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional synchronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment.
