In partnership with Love City Strong, LoveIT.vi, First Phase Datacomm and Computer Express on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Next Generation Network has instituted a free wireless hot spot (now called “DIRT Free”) to assist the St. John, US Virgin Islands community in the wake of Hurricane Irma.
This Wi-Fi access is provided through the 100% fiber optic viNGN network, and may be accessed in the Cruz Bay Area near the Boulon Center and Tennis Courts at any time; the public is urged to observe all official directives including curfew and area traffic as the ongoing recovery efforts continue.
To get online, visit Cruz Bay near the Boulon Center and Tennis Courts, and sign on to the Wi-Fi network named “DIRT Free” – no password is required.
viNGN President and CEO Dr. Mark McGibbon looks forward to the opportunity to contribute to the peace of mind of St. John residents, as the island was especially hard hit by Hurricane Irma: “We consider this an honorable responsibility to the people of St. John, many of whom have no other way to get in touch with loved ones or attend to important affairs,” McGibbon said.
“Communication is essential especially in an emergency such as this one, and viNGN is committed to doing everything we can to ensure public safety and peace of mind through cooperative efforts such as this one.”
“Communication is essential especially in an emergency such as this one, and viNGN is committed to doing everything we can to ensure public safety and peace of mind through cooperative efforts such as this one. Thanks to the civic-minded businesses that supported this. I especially wish to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of our Senior VP and Chief Information Officer Daryl Wade, Senior System Administrator Abed Hussein, Lead Field Technician Matthew Stephens, and Field Technician Pamela Woodward. They literally made a way out of no way, at times sacrificing their own comfort and bringing their combined formidable experience to bear in order to make this happen,” he concluded.
Another hot spot is operational on St. Thomas’ East End through partnership with ADM Wireless; visit the Red Hook area near the temporary Port Authority parking lot adjacent to the Eudora Kean Gymnasium, and sign on to the Wi-Fi network named “ADM-viNGN-free” – no password is required.
viNGN plans to establish similar access points, in cooperative effort with organizations so that free Wi-Fi can be made available in more spaces such as shelters and high-traffic areas for both islands.
