Accidental fiber cut affects connectivity for thousands
St. Croix, USVI — The Virgin Islands Next Generation Network (viNGN) is currently experiencing an outage due to a fiber cut caused by a non-viNGN utility company today (November 14, 2017) at 11:03am AST. The following areas are affected:
• St. Thomas
• St. John
If all goes as expected, repairs are anticipated to be completed by this afternoon. We appreciate the public’s patience during this unplanned outage and apologize for the inconvenience.
As a public service announcement, viNGN would like to note that this is not the first time that a fiber cut due to work-related activity has resulted in a network outage affecting thousands of U.S. Virgin Islands citizens, stopping personal communications and hindering commerce.
Post-Irma and Maria recovery momentum is severely hampered by these fiber cuts as well, as personnel must be redirected from restoration projects.
viNGN implores all public and private entities to take special care when working with heavy equipment and tools at all times when cutting/removing cables from utility poles, excavating, digging and creating pathways.
