VI Source: Economic Development Initiative Hopes to Create ‘Silicon Island’

The VI Economic Development office has announced a financial initiative that would provide funding toward re-creating St. Croix as “Silicon Island” through advancements in telecommunications technologies within 20 years.

According to Anthony Weeks of the St. Croix Economic Development Initiative (SEDI), the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands is poised to take its place on the global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) stage by virtue of the convergence and distribution of the second largest fiber optic bandwidth capability in the world (the Virgin Islands Next Generation Network, or viNGN.

viNGN makes the USVI the nation’s only fully interconnected, 100% fiber optic networked jurisdiction, which makes it unique and suited to the furtherance of advancements such as 5G, telemedicine, distance learning and robust and secure financial networks.
